Richter recently supported client, Story Contracting with works to a rail bridge which runs over the Cranfleet Cut Canal. As part of Network Rail’s CP6 programme, the upgrade works were delivered during the Christmas blockade so as not to disrupt the usual train service.

The existing half-through wrought iron bridge with two stiffened primary beams and cross girders, carrying the railway over the canal at Cranfleet Cut in Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire, was replaced with two new steel U-decks.

To facilitate the installation of the new bridge, Richter provided a series of temporary works design support; assessment to the existing structures suitability to be safely removed; the design of a temporary pontoon to allow safe access to the abutments and cills during works; a granular crane pad for an 800Te crane with superlift; site access road and crossing system (including swept path analysis) for the ingress, egress of the new bridge, and all site equipment.

Like most projects, challenges such as site location and programme require some additional technical advice. Through early contractor involvement, and collaborative working, Richter, Story Contracting and the permanent works designers, value engineered solutions to allow the possession works at Cranfleet Cut to be undertaken successfully.
