During the busy Christmas period of December 2021, Richter supported Story Contracting with another logistically challenging railway bridge replacement scheme, DCL-178. The structure which spans the Kingswood Arm Junction at Lapworth, that connects the Grand Union Canal to the South Stratford Canal was replaced within a 117-hour railway blockade, using a KIROW rail crane behind each abutment and a 500-tonne mobile crane to service the deliveries of equipment from the compound, onto railway bogies which were transported to the bridge structure.
In collaboration with the permanent works designer, the temporary works solutions were led by the Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) for Story Contracting. This was carried out via the progressive design review meeting process to obtain an appreciation of any interface considerations that were required. All the temporary work’s designs were geometrically coordinated to ensure the dismantling of the old structure and installation of the new, were not being obstructed or hindered for the subsequent activities in the delivery programme.
The temporary support bridge carrying the signalling and telecommunications cables was designed by one of Richter’s group of companies, 48.3 Scaffold Design, to allow for operatives to walk from one abutment to the other, during the deck off stage.
